To Be Or…Well, Not…

Shakespeare: undoubtedly the greatest writer to ever have lived. Or was he? Many people believe that Shakespeare was, in fact, not quite everything he was made out to be. And we’re not just talking crackpot theorists with a grudge to bear or people who pedal trailer insurance with nothing better to do with their spare time, no, many of these people are experts in the field of analysing and interpreting literature, and according to these people – who it would be hard to deem as not in-the-know considering their backgrounds – there is a strong chance that Shakespeare didn’t write half of his material. Popular opinion amongst these people suggests that it was the work of two or more writers, and yes, they can back this up with evidence that makes sense and is actually very plausible.

One of the big problems that these experts have found (and are finding) is that the text in various passages of Shakespeare’s work doesn’t match up. That is to say that there is an alarming difference in style and word usage which points to something sinister and can not be accounted for by progression or the like. Another thing which is of serious debate is how Shakespeare would have had access to the kind of material he wrote, seeing as at that time travelling around the world was not something that every person was privy to (in those days only the richest were able to travel anywhere at will and gain access to high-society events that Shakespeare wrote about).

Because of this, many people find it nearly impossible to believe that he could have written all of ’his’texts. To do so it is clear that he would have had to have been travelling almost all the time, which would have been exhausting and no doubt affected his artistic merits.

You decide: was Shakespeare a superhuman literary hero? Or is there more to the name than first meets the eye?
